A Systems Analysis Is Required When Retrofitting Recuperators to Furnaces

M. Hoetzl, Surface Combustion, Maumee, OH

The paper will point out that a “System Analysis” is required when retrofitting recuperators to furnaces.  Otherwise, the full benefits will not be achieved.

Specifically, this talk will describe the lessons learned from retrofitting recuperators to a batch radiant tube fired furnace.  It will describe the analysis that established the base case and predicted fuel savings.

Since the initial results did not achieve the desired fuel savings, the process to determine the cause of the discrepancy will be described.  The corrective actions and corresponding results will also be listed.

Finally, a comparison of the various parameters that affected the fuel savings will be given.  In addition, recommendations for future improvements will be made.
