This presentation examines the effects of vacuum carburization process variables on carbon profile and the relationship between gas quenching variables and alloy content on the hardness of 8620 and 9310 steel components. Results from experiments and process simulations are presented. For simplification, the “components” discussed are cylindrical shapes of several grades of steel having different hardenabilities. The experimental results provide a validation baseline for the simulations so that a computer-based prediction and design software can be used to effectively broaden the scope of the evaluation.
Summary: This presentation examines the effects of vacuum carburization process variables on carbon profile and the relationship between gas quenching variables and alloy content on the hardness of 8620 and 9310 steel components. Results from experiments and process simulations are presented. For simplification, the “components” discussed are cylindrical shapes of two grades of steel having different hardenabilities. The experimental results provide a validation baseline for the simulations so that a computer-based prediction and design software can be used to effectively broaden the scope of the evaluation.
