This presentation will briefly outline base material selection, manufacturing process and the effect of Nitride processing vs. Carburize and Harden on very large gears for the Wind Power and Compressor Industries. The primary presentation will be a case study of a large gear (3800 lbs) for a compressor application that was experiencing premature failure due to gear teeth sheering off. The end user and gear manufacturer required base material assessment, case depth requirements and their impact on product reliability, while streamlining the manufacturing process at the same time. Dimensional stability was also a primary concern. This presentation will explain the plan that was established, test methods used to prove out the right base material and the outcome of re-design using Controlled Gas Nitride as the Heat Treat method.
Summary: This presentation will briefly outline base material selection, manufacturing process and the effect of Nitride processing vs. Carburize and Harden on very large gears for the Wind Energy and Compressor Industries. The primary presentation will be a case study of a large gear (3800 lbs)for a compressor application that was experiencing premature failure due to gear teeth sheering off. The end user and gear manufacturer required base material assessment, case depth requirements and their impact on product reliability while streamlining the manufacturing process at the same time. Dimensional stability was also a primary concern. This presentation will explain the plan of action that was established, test methods used to prove out the right base material and the outcome of re-design using Controlled Gas Nitride (CGN)as the Heat Treat method.
