Designing and Use of Combination of PAG (Polyalkylene Glycol) and SodiumPolyacrylate Based Polymer Quenchants In Regular and Induction Hardening

A. Purandare, Manisha Society, Manisha Society,, India

This paper describes manufacturing and application methods for polymer quenchants having PAG and

Sodium Polyacrylates as base polymers and the use of additives packages for prevention of bacterial and

fungus activity and for rust free components and also for very long sump life.

The various trials were conducted with various combinations and percentages of polymer quenchants

and results for different variety of steels were recorded and analyzed. All most all the trials showed

marked decrease in distortion and cracking in various steels without sacrifice of hardness values.

Use of these polymers in regular quenching eliminated water quenching. In many cases, the modified

polymer quenchants eliminated costly, fire and smoke hazardous oil quenching.

The modified quenchants are in use at various heat treatment and induction hardening units in India.
