Powder Metallurgy (PM) is a cost effective alternative to traditional manufacturing processes combining high material utilization, complex net shape capability, tight tolerances, and low energy consumption. Heat treatment of PM materials in combination with advances in compacting and sintering technologies have resulted in materials with heat treated properties similar to SAE 4140 steels. This paper will evaluate a possibility of using intensive water quenching method known as IntensiQuench® process (IQ) for PM parts. The properties of common PM material systems obtained via IQ will be compared against a conventional heat treatment practice.
