Reducing and Oxidizing Atmospheres In Heat Treatments

B. Bernard, Surface Combustion, Inc., Maumee, OH

Reducing and oxidizing "Redox" reactions have an impact on part quality for subsequent processing.  In addition, the actual incoming part quality, heat treatment atmosphere selection, method of measurement, and control greatly affect results.  Atmospheres for heat treating equipment including protective, reactive, carbon controlled atmosphere types will be discussed and illustrated with case studies. A review of proper atmosphere for materials and control methods developed will be presented.
