Low, Cost High Capability Process Control Systems Control Atmospheres Using Infrared and Oxygen Probes

J. T. McCormick, Surface Combustion Inc., Maumee, OH

Atmosphere control has long been a popular subject as well as an indispensable resource in the heat treat. With more importance being placed on redundancy and also cross checking of furnace atmosphere carbon potential, especially with CQI-9 specifications, a new system has been developed that provides these much needed benefits.  The new controls are low cost using today's most cost effective electronics. They have the ability to utilize two oxygen probes that are cross checked, as well as an infrared three gas analyzer for additional cross checking of furnace atmospheres. The systems also provide redundant furnace thermocouples and have built in off line atmosphere calculators that eliminate the need to reference charts or graphs.
