High Strength/Density nanoMAG Alloys

J. Huang, R. Vining, S. LeBeau , R. Decker, Thixomat/nanoMAG, Ann Arbor, MI; S. M. Kulkarni, Boston Scientific, Maple Grove, MN

By combining Thixomolding® and its fine grain size with thermomechanical processing, nanostructures are produced in high strength/density Mg alloys.  Thus, the combination of strength, ductility and formability can be optimized at strength levels at or above 250 MPa.  These nanoMAG alloys are attractive for applications in the aerospace, armor, recreational vehicle, battery/fuel cell, sports equipment and electronic/communications fields.  Furthermore,  possible applications as temporary body implants is of high interest, due the absorbable nature and the biological friendliness of Mg.
