Present work is a case study of a mill shaft from AISI 4340 (240mm diameter) tempered and quenched showing mixed structures (bainite and martensite) as in the surface as in the core. Evaluation on the longitudinal direction of the bar shown a coarse banding structure. Thickness band corresponds about four or five austenite grain sizes. Chemical analysis confirmed that the banding structure was responsible for the differential hardenability.
