Marcus Grossmann and his colleagues was one of the global leaders in relating quenching severity requirements relative to steel hardenability. His first publications in this research field date from approximately 1940 and continued into the 1950s. The impact of his work, particularly the use of H (hardenability)-Values continue to be cited and used in research papers and handbooks around the world even today. The objectives of this lecture are to: 1.) provide a brief background on Marcus Grossman; 2.) provide an overview of his research and comment on the impact of this work on current research and industry; and 3.) to discuss the potential impact of both the classical work as conducted by Grossmann and current research on future directions of this critically important technology.
