Ion Vapor Deposited Coatings Improved Corrosion Protection for AM Parts

Ion Vapor Deposition (IVD) is physical deposition process for applying pure aluminum coatings to AM parts of various alloyed, mainly for corrosion protection and improve surface condition. To prevent contamination of pure aluminum, the coating is applied in a vacuum system. This paper will discuss current applications of this technology in review before illustrating newer AM applications currently being examined by several industries. The use of vacuum deposition techniques is mature and well established. Applying this technology to AM parts is new and coincide with the emergence and growth of the AM parts used in aerospace, electronics and electric car industries. The coating system utilizes conventional vacuum technology. The equipment consist of vacuum chamber, a pumping system racking, evaporation source and high power supply. The new technology provides excellent coating uniformity throughout AM parts surface including edges. The process is a low temperature process and has no influence on parts distortion. Common application includes missile cases, turbine blades. The secret to excellent coatings dependent on parts cleanses, correct part configuration and vacuum level.
