ASHTECH provided a perfect opportunity to systematically optimize the hardening of 8 DP test gears using DPIH (Dual Pulse Induction Hardening). DPIH, like most induction processes is an art. The experimentation was designed to achieve the following:
  • Optimization of coil design for spur gears
  • Impact of process variables
  • Identification of control/noise factors
  • Repeatability of the process

In order to study the DPIH design requirements and to improve the process and product quality, six experiments were designed. DEXPERT, a patented software package to aid in the design of experiments, was key to the design of the six experiments and analysis of the resulting data.
