Mr. Cory Padfield , American Axle and Manufacturing, Detroit, MI
AAM designs, engineers and manufactures systems and technologies that are making the next generation of vehicles smarter, lighter, safer and more efficient. Heat treatment has been considered one of the seven core competencies at AAM since the company was established in 1994. AAM is a high-volume heat treater around the world, with typical processes like case hardening for gears and induction hardening for axle shafts. This presentation will provide background on heat treating processes used by AAM in the past and present, and highlight future technologies that will be necessary to meet demanding new requirements for automobiles. New products may require different materials and heat treatment processes as the market accelerates the use of new technologies for mass reduction and higher efficiency in traditional drivelines, and as there are shifts toward more hybrid and battery electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles.
