Advancements in HIP equipment offer the ability to integrate HIP and heat treatment with the aid of rapid cooling and quenching. This strategy is referred to as High Pressure Heat Treatment (HPHT) and has shown to not only offer improvement in productivity but also provides a path to prevent anomalies during heat treatment including thermally induced porosity and quench cracking and distortion.
This presentation will highlight equipment advancements enabling HPHT in a HIP unit. A study will be reviewed capturing the use of HPHT on L-PBF F357. Cycle parameter selection will be summarized with resulting microstructure, tensile properties, and part distortion reviewed. The results capture the development of a process method making it possible to prevent hydrogen blistering for a defect free material, properties exceeding that of MMPDS cast properties, and the ability to mitigate geometric distortion of quench sensitive complex part geometries.
