Different applications for EV transmissions require a higher toughness to provide maximum potential torque. Heat treatment has evolved to effectively achieve these necessary higher core hardness requirements with deeper case depth from carburizing. At the same time, carburizing specifications for case depth are more restrictive and complex due to the style of part. Let’s discuss how low pressure carburizing (LPC) and a chosen quench media (oil or high pressure gas) can provide higher heat treatment consistency and improve performance while controlling distortion levels for noise in EV applications.
