“Heat Treatment Effects on Sintering of Highly Grain-refined Dy-free Nd-Fe-B Anisotropic Magnets”

For electric vehicle traction motors to reach high power density levels, strong permanent magnets, exemplified by Nd-Fe-B, are critical. Unfortunately, Dy additions are needed to enable motor operating temperatures of 150-180C and Dy is scarce and subject to escalating prices. Promising lab-scale (thin film) work on ultrafine (<1-3µm) grain size magnets also produced beneficial high temperature magnetics and our new research is aimed at fully scalable design and processing of Dy-free Nd-Fe-B magnets for deployment in electric vehicles.
