"Materials Science and Thermal Processing at DARPA – On the Road to Discovery"

DARPA played a pivotal role is establishing the field of Materials Science in 1960 with the creation of interdisciplinary labs at three universities – soon expanded to a dozen – to provide stable funding for research focused on developing materials. The agency has remained a constant driver in discovery and development of new technologies in materials and manufacturing – ranging from glossy carbon for surgical implants still in use today and rare-earth permanent magnets central to high-altitude operation of electronic warfare systems; to new computational tools for understanding thermal processing of additively manufactured materials and new thermal sensors that offer an order of magnitude better performance over the state of the art. This talk focuses on DARPA investments that have sped development of new capabilities in the field of thermal processing, as well as current investments that will enable future revolutionary breakthroughs.
