The diffusion of carbon interstitially within the lattices of low carbon steel is a time and temperature dependent relationship. This has historically been achieved using atmosphere furnaces and traditional high temperature quench oils. Recent investigations evaluate the effects of using atmosphere carburizing furnaces along with using a special high temperature quench oil with the cooling speed of a conventional quench oil.
This paper will discuss the effects of how a faster special quench oil can shorten the carburizing time and provide the needed hardness, metallurgy compared to a normal hot quench oil. During the study, we also have found that faster quench can shorten the carburizing time and that is possible to significantly reduce the overall energy requirements and reduce the overall operational costs.
