Evaluation of Brazed Joints Using Failure Assessment Diagram

A “fitness-for-service” approach was used to ascertain structural capability of the brazed joints. Failure Assessment Diagram (FAD) was constructed based the previous studies of various base metal/filler metal combinations. A simple engineering methodology is proposed for evaluation of margins of safety of structural brazed joints. FAD is constructed based on experimental determination of shear t_o and tensile σ_o allowables. Area inside the FAD line is a safe combination of stresses, or safe zone. 1^st principal and maximum shear in the brazed joint of interest subjected to the design loads are estimated by FEA using global model of the brazed assembly.
