A “fitness-for-service” approach was used to ascertain structural capability of the brazed joints. Failure Assessment Diagram (FAD) was constructed based the previous studies of various base metal/filler metal combinations. A simple engineering methodology is proposed for evaluation of margins of safety of structural brazed joints. FAD is constructed based on experimental determination of shear to and tensile σo allowables. Area inside the FAD line is a safe combination of stresses, or safe zone. 1st principal and maximum shear in the brazed joint of interest subjected to the design loads are estimated by FEA using global model of the brazed assembly.
