Professor Inoue – Pioneer in Analytical Modeling of Heat Treat Processes

Abstract:
Professor Tatsuo Inoue of Kyoto University was one of the early proponents of computer modeling of heat treat processes using numerical methods. He recognized the innate effects that thermal treatments had on metallurgical events and resultant stresses within a part during these processes, and how the final microstructure, mechanical properties, residual stresses and part dimensions were achieved. He experimented and modeled a variety of metals, part geometries, and processes in his drive to further the understanding of these complex relationships. He, along with quite a few other pioneers in this field that were literally scattered around the world have led to the developments that we see today in analytical modeling of thermal processes. This presentation will briefly review some of his work, but spend more time looking at where we are and where we are going with this technology.
