“Adventures in Interface Chemistry: From Atomic Organization to Bulk Powders and How These Determine the Future of Energy Storage”

It has been said that nearly every battery material has been identified.  The challenge is how to synthesize and assemble disparate materials to ensure ion and electron transport, repeated electrochemical cycling and long lifetimes to recuperate costs and minimize energy input.  These processes are particularly important for the next generation of energy storage technologies such as all solid-state, silicon/lithium metal anodes, and metal air batteries given the technological advances and cost reductions that have been wrung out of traditional lithium-ion batteries.  Addressing interface challenges for next generation batteries are essential to the economic competitiveness of stationary grid storage, advanced transportation, fast recharging systems, and the domestic battery industry. This presentation will discuss the surface chemistry of battery materials.  How this surface chemistry controls molecular interactions and mediate the resulting performance of the battery.  Finally, how understanding this surface chemistry predictively leads to the assembly of materials ensembles with enhanced energy storage capabilities.
