Effective substitution of materials for performance, economic or environmental reason requires a substantive library of materials data and the right tools to quickly select and compare material candidates based on specific needs. This presentation will focus on using GRANTA Selector, an extensive and reliable database of over 4,000 materials as well as investigative tools, for fast access to relevant information and the ability to clearly present and justify any decisions before strategic materials replacements.

By considering material properties such as those affecting performance, carbon footprint and geo-economic information like criticality, this presentation will show use cases that demonstrate how GRANTA Selector can be used to identify the best material replacement candidates with minimal disruption to existing applications.

The use cases for such data and tools in GRANTA Selector cut across education, research and industry. For example, in engineering courses, it is important for students to understand the key material properties for any application, consider the risks as well as the trade-offs involved in material selection and hence substitution. In research and industry applications, the disruption of a supply chain, new regulations, cost savings and reducing environmental impact are just some of the reasons why it would be necessary to efficiently and effectively make material substitutions.
