A failure analysis was conducted on a series of cracked air compressors used in suspension motor vehicle seating. During the failure investigation, evidence of stress corrosion cracking was observed. Analysis was conducted on cracked air compressors via fractography, OES, XRF, and SEM/EDS. Supplemental examination was conducted via radiographic techniques and finite element analysis. The failure mode and the potential root cause of the failure will be discussed. Recommendations are provided to prevent recurrence.
