Case Studies on Fatigue Cracking from Inertia Welds of Gas Turbine Components

The presentation covers some case studies where fatigue cracking extended from inertia welds on some new-make high pressure turbine disks and a case study where one was found on a fielded compressor spool. The investigation shows the features observed and subsequent testing that was performed to understand root cause, including looking at internal residual stresses or other anomalies.
