To meet the nation’s goals for a zero-emissions economy by 2050 will require substantial change from business as usual across industry sectors. At the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, we seek to identify pathways to address this challenge from a variety of perspectives, including through enhanced sustainability in metals manufacturing. Here I will describe PNNL’s vision for sustainable metals manufacturing using a scalable approach called Solid Phase Processing, which has been demonstrated to significantly reduce the life-cycle energy and resource impacts of manufacture while also delivering new materials and products with extraordinary performance.
