The talk describes the phenomenon of reversible temper embrittlement of steel. Our current understanding of the mechanism by which this type of embrittlement occurs, and the history of that understanding will be reviewed. Examples of failures resulting from temper embrittlement will be presented. Best practices for avoiding temper embrittlement will be discussed.
