Managing Materials Data for Sustainability

It is positive to see the increase in climate initiatives across the globe, some new, some reaffirming an existing resolve and other making more ambitious targets. With more initiatives come more goals for those in industries affected by these initiatives. Materials play a big part in this. “70% of all global greenhouse gas emissions are related to material handling and use[i].” In order to make significant impact on emissions and resource use (energy or feedstocks) the way we choose and use materials has to overhauled.

One of the big challenges in quantifying, and hence mitigating, the effects of material use on planet is managing the data needed to carry out an analysis. Material options themselves can be overwhelming and the information available can be complex. Not only that, the regulations and restrictions around materials is increasing and changes regularly.

This presentation will present a workflow that allows you to effectively manage materials data, from research labs, academic and industry partnerships and test facilities. Ansys Granta MI allows you to effectively manage in-house data from research and production, including sustainability related information like energy use for production, emissions and compliance. Combining this in-house data with the Granta comprehensive library of materials enables optimal material selection capabilities that can help to improve the way we choose and use materials.
