Hot-dipped aluminum-zinc (Galvalume) coatings are commonly used for roofing and recognized for providing corrosion resistance in this application. However, when an aluminum-zinc coated metallic roof endures a hailstorm, a question that oftentimes arises is: how much damage is too much damage? When a visual, on-site assessment is not sufficient, metallurgical analyses may be the key to answering this question.

This presentation focuses on metallographic techniques used by ESi to investigate metal roofs dented by hail. Several case studies involving laboratory examination of aluminum-zinc coated roof samples will be discussed. The case studies will provide real-world examples of how metallurgical analyses can be employed to provide relevant recommendations for continued use, repair, or replacement of roofs.
