In the search for high performance and sustainable energy storage technology, over the past decades there have been significant advances in cost-effective and high energy density battery materials. The microstructure of electrode and electrolyte materials in batteries need to be precisely controlled and understood in order to maximize the device performance. In this talk, I will present some recent progress on characterizing atomic-level structure and chemistry of battery materials using ex situ/in situ transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and cryo-electron microscopy characterization techniques to achieve a fundamental understanding of dynamic liquid-solid and/or solid-solid interactions, and structural/compositional changes.
