Bridges have been failing since the first one was built. In the US, formal investigations and regulation really began with the Silver Bridge collapse over the Ohio River in December 1967. In depth investigation resulted in regulations to address the finding. This pattern of failure, investigation and regulation has continued to this day. This presentation will address significant failures that changed the way bridges are designed, inspected and maintained from then to today.
