Paint defects can come in many forms, including but not limited to, delamination, craters, dirt, and blisters. Generally, there are three primary factors that influence why paint defects occur, which are 1) surface preparation and cleanliness, 2) environment application, and 3) time. Thus, background information provided by clients is an important step in determining the nature and cause of the paint defects. However, even with all the background information, failure analysis of the defects can prove to be a challenge when you factor in multiple paint systems and substrates. This presentation will address a number of paint defects on various substrates and their causes. It will also discuss techniques for paint defect identification and analysis and further discuss recommendations to solve the paint defect problems. Specific examples and case studies will be used to illustrate paint defects and methods and techniques to characterize them.
