Thixomolding™ Developments

Since it’s introduction to industry in 1990 by Thixomat, Thixomolding™ has expanded to international commercial practice in the United States, Asia and Europe. More than 600 Thixomolding machines have been manufactured, now covering the range from 250 tons to 3,000 tons capacity. The advantages confirmed with Thixomolding are a) environmentally clean and safe, b) net shaping with little, if any, machining, c) thin sections down to 0.5 mm, d) fine grain size and e) low porosity. Thixomolded Mg alloy stock is then amenable to thermomechanical processing (TTMP) to generate high strength with improved ductility and low texture. Recent applications will be featured.
