Materials scientists and engineers are, as we all know, actually both. We are trained to approach problems on multiple scales – looking at how an atomic structure affects macroscale properties; or how raw material processing will affect the characteristics of a final product. Similarly, every young materials scientist needs to approach their career as a multiscale challenge. Starting with an unfocused mix of personal, professional, financial, health, family, long-term, and short-term goals, small decisions today can affect big outcomes tomorrow. It may feel as though every decision appears to shut down one possibility in favor of another. This presentation will focus on how to navigate these various scales – and find an opportunity to distinguish yourself.
