Invited Talk: Dr. Ryan M. Paul, Graftech International Holdings Inc, presents, "Sustainability and Sourcing of Synthetic Graphite for Li-ion Batteries"

Graphite is used commercially as the active anode material in a lithium-ion battery. It is energy-intensive to produce, and its supply chain is highly concentrated. This talk explains the differences between natural and synthetic graphite types and the role that graphite plays in electric vehicle batteries. It also reviews current efforts to create more sustainable and diverse supply chains and the remaining challenges to closing the loop in the graphite life cycle.
