Diamond Impregnated Metal Matrix Tools are used in Industrial, Mining and Construction Industries for the past number of decades with great success. A typical Diamond Tool would be a Segmented Saw Blade used for stone and road construction. Another example would be a Diamond Core Drill used in mining and construction. The Diamond Impregnated Metal Matrices are manufactured as Segments using Powder Metallurgy, either Hot Pressing or Free Sintering. The Segments are positioned around the circumference of the saw blade for instance. However, Diamond Impregnated Metal Matrix Segments have an inherent brittleness. This can often lead to Segments fracturing due to Impact during the cutting operation.
Research work has been carried out to examine the Impact Properties of these Diamond Impregnated Cobalt Metal Matrices. The Amount called the Concentration and Size of the Diamond Crystals used in the Diamond Tool Segments has been examined to ascertain the Impact Properties due to changes in these variable and the Effects of the Diamond Additions.
