Mr. Dan Carabell, M.S. , ESi, Ann Arbor, MI
A large cast industrial water pump casing unexpectedly failed within the first 15 years of service. Through-wall corrosion was observed in the sidewall of the casting. The internal pump vanes also exhibited extensive material degradation in various locations of the housing. This presentation discusses the methods used to evaluate the failure mode of the pump casing as well as how the service life, environment, and materials used in the design contributed to the corrosion failure.
