Finding Materials Science and Engineering Careers in the US Federal Government
Monday, October 20, 2025: 11:40 AM
Of the two percent of engineering students who choose to study materials science and engineering in the United States, most find post-graduate careers in industry or academia. However, there is also a unique and viable career path in working as a federal employee for the United States government. This presentation will detail the agencies and departments where materials engineers are needed and likely to find employment, as well as some sites that are not commonly known for needing those skilled in metallurgy, biomaterials, and failure analysis. The talk will also discuss navigating through USAJobs and the hiring process, as well as fulfilling general requirements for obtaining security clearances for those positions where they are required. Open discussion and questions will be encouraged as part of this presentation.
