Requirements are typically defined starting with the form, fit, and function of the part in its system. From there, the part must be manufactured in a manner to enable it to meet requirements. Material input to the manufacturing process must then allow the manufacturing process to make a compliant part repeatedly and reliably. In this presentation, we will explore the characteristics of several Additive Manufacturing processes concerning powder movement and powder behavior. Further, the influence of powder movement on the powder behavior (i.e., melt, deformation, etc.) will also be discussed. Lastly, we will explore the characteristics of powder particles, the population of particles, and the influence of the manufacturing process on those particles. All of these factors have a direct influence on process economics, which ties directly back to the part made of an AM process being able to meet requirements.
