Both mushroom farms and facilities used to prepare compost for mushroom farming present unique challenges for corrosion prevention. High humidity and elevated temperatures, coupled with the presence of environmental contaminants such as manure, chlorides, evolved ammonia and hydrogen sulfide [H2S] / sulfates, often result in very aggressive conditions to both metallic and organic coatings. Several incidents have been reported over the years in facilities constructed using both galvanized steel and steel protected by various coating systems. Design choices and coating selections will be reviewed considering known operational issues to assess if coating selection was a primary cause of field failures.
