This presentation examines the failure mechanisms that led to the fracture of a brass fitting in a residential water supply system. A comprehensive metallurgical investigation of the fitting was conducted, utilizing both macroscopic and microscopic analyses, including visual examination, light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) examination, microstructure examination, and hardness testing. This case highlights the detrimental failures that can arise when the material selection process is not carefully considered for the intended service environment.
