A fractographic examination is a commonly used tool for failure analysis. The morphological features provides significant information about origin, directionality, mode, and mechanism. However, fracture features created by a mechanism in one class of materials may resemble the fracture features of a different mechanism in a different class of materials, leading to misidentification. This talk will briefly show examples of similar fracture features caused by different mechanisms in different materials classes and different fracture features caused by the same mechanisms in different materials classes.
