Materials have been integral to medical devices since humans have been trying to fix themselves; think glass eyes, wooden and golden teeth, and linen sutures. Contemporary biomaterials have to go through rigorous study, testing, and regulations prior to being implanted in a human. This talk will focus on the considerations taken when determining the materials used in a medical device and what types of careers are available for a material scientist in medical devices.
