Discussion and examples of gas turbine bearing sub-surface ball spalling

The presentation will describe the subsurface damage mechanism in ball bearings, driven by cyclic shear stresses and microstructural inhomogeneities (such as voids and inclusions). Using selected SEM images and metallographic mounts, it will illustrate the characteristic features of crack initiation and their progression into macroscopic spalls.
