"The Existing HIP Paradigm and the Need for Changes - Hot Isostatic Pressing for Large-Scale Components" Victor Samarov Synertech PM Inc, The Presentation will discuss the 4 main challenges and their possible solutions for HIP of Large and Very Large parts from powder materials for critical applications by analyzing the non-uniformity HIP paradoxes. The existing PM HIP Paradigm needs a critical review when it comes to HIP of large parts and the solid state transformation of the rapidly solidified particles into high quality material and obtaining complex near net shape (NNS). The HIP theory and the need for process modeling are discussed for the shape and material quality control. The limits for the NNS must be established through the limitations in modeling, inspection and machining costs, The traditional; PM canning technology (fabrication, filling outgassing) becomes inefficient and must be revised for the parts weighing many tons. For HIP of so large parts there is no space for dimensional iterations and the analysis demonstrates a possibility to provide the  PM HIPed NNS shapes from the ”First Shot”. The presentation also discusses the macro and micro-non uniformity of material properties formed during HIP of Large Scale Shape Parts including also the nature of PPBs in PM HIPed alloys and the ways for mitigation.
