As additive manufacturing moves toward production‑relevant use, a clear understanding of process–structure–property relationships and manufacturability constraints becomes essential. This invited talk presents results focused on establishing fundamental knowledge for Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) on 17‑4 PH stainless steels. The presentation highlights how LPBF process variables such as machine configuration, build orientation, and post‑processing heat treatments—govern microstructure evolution, residual stress mitigation, and mechanical performance. Surface integrity is examined in detail, showing how inclination angle, upskin exposure strategies, remelting, and sand blasting influence surface roughness and morphology. The talk also addresses dimensional inspection challenges unique to LPBF, highlighting the influence of measurement association criteria on reported hole dimensions. Overall, the presentation translates LPBF fundamentals into practical guidance for advanced materials manufacturing.
