Background: Optimizing heat treatment processes requires a comprehensive understanding of how specific quenching media interact with different material compositions.

Objective: This study evaluates the metallurgical and mechanical effects of two distinct cold quenching oils on three standard steel alloys.

Methodology: The quenching media included one slow and one fast cold quenching oil, categorized by their maximum cooling rates and characterized via cooling curve analysis in accordance with ASTM D-6200. These oils were tested against three steel grades offering distinct hardenability profiles: AISI 1045, AISI 4340, and AISI D2. All specimens were subjected to a controlled quenching and tempering heat treatment cycle.

Results/Evaluation: The impact of the oil-alloy combinations was quantified through microstructural characterization alongside mechanical property testing, specifically evaluating hardness, tensile strength, and impact toughness.
