Properties of WC-10Co-4Cr Powders and Coatings Made of Recycled Hard Metal

U. K. M. Kanerva, K. Kosme, J. Lagerbom, P. Vuoristo, Tampere University of Technology, Tampere, Finland; T. Karhumaa, Tikka Group Oy, Tikkakoski, Finland

HVOF sprayed WC-Co(Cr) coatings are used to prevent wear and corrosion properties. Commercially available hardmetal powders for HVOF spraying are normally manufactured from virgin raw materials. In the present work, the possibility to manufacture WC-Co(Cr) spray powder with excellent properties and quality from recycled cemented carbide tools and tool bits was studied. The powders were manufactured from hardmetal scrap by series of processing steps. The powders were sprayed with the HVOF process. Properties of the powders and coatings were studied and compared with several commercially available state-off-the-art WC-Co(Cr) powders and coatings with the same nominal compositions. Experimental powders worked well during spraying and quality of coatings was equal or even better than the commercial coatings. Excellent corrosion properties were obtained with the new spray powders manufactured from recycled hardmetal.
