New State-of-the-Art Cold Spray Equipment

J. G. Legoux, B. Harvey, Industrial Materials Institute, Boucherville, QC, Canada; C. Moreau, National Research Council Canada (CNRC-NRC), Boucherville,, QC, Canada; S. Yue, McGill University, Montreal, QC, Canada

McGill University and the Industrial Material Institute of the NRC have installed a new state-of-the-art multi gun cold spray facility. This paper is aimed at describing the installation that was specially developed at the NRC location in Boucherville. The facility is composed of two spray apparati, control room, sealed spray hood and a spray chamber. The sample displacement and gun movement are robotized. The system is also equipped with a helium recovery system. Diagnostic systems, such as Schlieren imaging, particle monitoring and visualization equipment, as well as in-situ laser surface preparation have been integrated in the spray facility.

The facility will be described as well as the installation process. Emphasis will be put on the lessons learned in the installation and breaking-in period. A description of the helium recovery process and its efficiency will be included.
