Thermal Spray Coatings from WC-Co Powders Produced by Mechanically Activated Synthesis

S. Zimakov, P. Peetsalu, J. Pirso, P. Kulu, V. Mikli, Tallinn University of Technology, Tallinn, Estonia

In the present study WC-Co feedstock powder was produced by the process termed as mechanically activated synthesis (MAS). The material was sprayed  by the HVOF process to investigate the properties of the coatings in comparison to standart materials.
The microstructure, phase structure, porosity and microhardness values of the coatings were studied. The abrasion wear resistance of the coatings was elavuated by rubber wheel abrasion tests. Results of abrasive wear tests show that new material have superior properties compared to conventional WC-Co coatings.

Summary: On the basis of WC-Co feedstock powders produced by mechanically activated synthesis the coatings has been sprayed using HVOF system. Microstructure and wear properties of sprayed coatings were investigated and compared to standart materials.
