State of the Art Thermal Spray Cabinets

M. S. Van Wonderen, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Schiphol-Airport, Netherlands

Changes in the aerospace industry on aviation laws, occupational health laws, environmental laws, safety laws, CE-directives, standards of SAE, CEN, DIN, AMS, etc., forces the industry to look to innovative solutions to stay competitive in the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) business. This means mainly trying to find and implement computerized and automated processes in such way to get the operator out of the process as much as possible (less exposure of personnel to hazard dusts, noises and UV-light). Also improved manual cabinets with new features will lead to less exposure to personnel. An example of a new feature is smart solutions in suction, filtration and exhaust systems. In 2004 KLM invested in 5 new thermal spray cabinets. This paper will show KLM’s state of the art thermal spray cabinets and their unique features.

Summary: Within the aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul business companies have to fulfill much tighter requirements on work climates, environment and safety nowadays. Because also Thermal Spray processes have to follow the legal directives on personnel exposure and emission of hazardous materials KLM invested in 2004 in new state of the art thermal spray cabinets.
